10 - Cat as a Scary Object

We were told to make cat as a scary object. The first thing that crossed my mind was cat's poo. It is so smelly that people could smell it miles away and it is really hard to get rid of the smell as well. The second thing was the fur colour, I think it is a known fact that black cat represents bad omen. To make it scarier, it has neon green eyes that seems as if they kept staring at us. The last thing would be their sharp teeth. If it is longer, it would be scary.

09 - Writing and Juxtaposing

So they say you're spicy like chilli;
The zesty taste made tear well up;

Made me want to spit it out;

And drink some water to forget it;

But, damn does that taste good.

And so they say love is like chilli.

Take a sip to know;
It differs with everyone;
Some say it sweet, some bitter, some plain;
Made us stay up late;
High with adrenaline running through;
Face flushed sipping it;
Hey there, want a cuppa, love?Drop by drop,
The pain was unbearable
Like you had ate an icecream
On a snowy day
Melt please
Like how icecream melted
On a sunny day
Melt away, drop by drop

08 - Impossible Combination

Mr Radzi told us to combine two different animals that when they are combined it would be impossible for them to continue living. I chose lion and fish because recently I watched 'The Other Guys' in which the film, the two main characters debated about tuna and lion.

So credits to 'The Other Guys' for the inspiration.

LION

FISH

When both of the animals combined it would be lionfish.

07 - Juxtaposition & Metaphor

Juxtaposition

*Placing two variables beside each other.

two things are situated side by side and your brain will try to figure what is the relationship between these two?

Metaphor

* using as / like
e.g: Life is a box of chocolate.

*analogies are divided into two categories

- logical
comparison between birds and aeroplane

- effective
stupid like a cow

06 - Random Words Association

We were given 20 random words.

1. Flower

0. Head

2. Lightning

9. Rain

3. Ice

8. Wood

4. Light

7. Tree

5. Fire

6. Spider

6. Duck

5. Root

7. Dog

4. Mountain

8. Oil

3. Wind

9. Leaf

2. Rock

0. Fly

1. Water

Then we were instructed to choose three numbers. So I chose number 02, 03 and 28.

Which bring me to a combination of; 02 - Fly and Rock, 03 - Fly and Wind and 28 - Lightning and Wood. Then we were told to compose a sentence regarding the random words we had unexpectedly chosen. After that, we were told to draw images that represents the sentence.

02. Flyrock

The fly was killed by me using the rock.

03. Flywind

To fly, the first thing we need is wind.

28. Lightningwood

When lightning strucks a wood it would burn to ashes.

Next, we were told to draw the images in literal sense as in flyrock draw it as a flyrock.

*flyrock

*flywind

* lightningwood

05 - Mind Mapping

A little intro on mind map; it was introduced by Tony Buzan and was said to enhance both sides of human brain and is able to stimulate and create interest.

There are two types of mind map; logical and associated mind map.

Logical mind map:
--> directly connected to stereotypes
--> for gathering information only
--> images and words are directly related
*NOT GOOD FOR IDEA GENERATION!

Associated mind map:
--> able to generate random words
--> shows the link between words that have no connection

On the topic of mind mapping, we were asked to draw a mind map about our friend. So Yasmin was assigned to draw a mind map for me and this was the result:
We were also asked to draw an avatar for each other and this is what Yasmin came up with:

04 - Mortar and Pestle

We are told by Mr. Radzi Bedu to do some exercise involving mortar and pestle, in which we need to imagine a usage for mortar and pestle for the future.
Well, for introduction mortar and pestle or as the Malays called it 'lesung batu' is originally a tool used to crush and grind and mix solid substances. But, for now, let's imagine what mortar and pestle could do using random words that Mr. Radzi had provided us with but I chose three words to use; Malaysia, fashion and great wall.

01. Malaysia
*Mortar and pestle could be the new Malaysia flag.
*It'd symbolise unity as all kind of race use mortar and pestle in their daily life.

02. Fashion
*New type of shoe
*Pestle as the heels and mortar as the platform.

03. Great wall*Speaks for itself - The Great Wall of Mortar and Pestle

03 - Creating Image of Public Figure

Does the name Bill Gates rings any bell? If don't, you better not use your PC and laptop (excluded if you're a Mac user). Well, aside from being one of the wealthiest man in the world and one of the famous Harvard-dropouts that succeed, he is also the founder of Microsoft. You should at least know that or else I'll think that you've been living under a rock for the last decade.Let's see, how the guy in the image above turn into the guy in the image below and what novelty, creativity, innovation and invention had to do with it.

So in 1977 (the year when the mugshot of Gates taken for traffic violation), Steve Jobs had already invented Apple II PC. Gates did not have a definite study plan while a student at Harvard and spent a lot of time using the school's computers. He dropped out from Harvard after talking to his parents about setting up a new company.

Then, IBM approached them to write BASIC interpreter for its upcoming PC, the IBM PC. In 1981, IBM's first PC was invented.

After that, what happened was a PC evolution. You see, before this, PC was simply for office work. But then it keeps on evolving into an entertainment tool and nowadays as a communications tool.

Microsoft had become a household name and heck you would see big MICROSOFT logo the first when you open up your PC or laptop (again, unless you're a Mac user). The invention of Microsoft had made Gates a boundary pusher (based on MITS Altair 8800 - the first computer) in terms of creativity but I'd say that he had made the world a better place with the invention of Microsoft.

02 - Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

What is Novelty?

It's a new thing in a whole, in other word the quality of being new usually abstract or impressionism, it essentially exists in the perception of ones on the subject.

What is Creativity?

For a complete introduction on creativity, please refer to my previous post. There are four types of creativity:

  1. Aesthetic organiser
  2. Boundary pusher
  3. Inventors
  4. Boundary breakers

What is Innovation?

It is a process of making improvement to existing ideas by introducing a new thing. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy specific needs. It is also divided into two broad categories.

Evolutionary Innovations

1. Continuous evolutionary innovations

-alteration of product characteristic
-do not require any user-learning or changes

e.g: Laptop, toothpaste

2. Dynamic continuous evolutionary innovations

-requires some user learning

e.g: Fax machines, instant photography

Revolutionary Innovations

Requires good deal of user learning and often disrupts ones routine.

e.g: Photocopy machine, PC

What is Invention?

It is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough.
